Entheoscillator

Three oscillators plotted against each other draw a mandala. That has always been the whole idea.

Statement

Entheoscillator is three people, a table of oscillators, and a pile of instruments older than recording.

We build long-form ambient music the slow way. A drone gets laid down and left alone to breathe. Harmonium and bowls are tuned against it by ear, not by a chart. Granular synthesis pulls the overtones apart until the room starts ringing back, and then we follow whatever the room is doing. Nothing is in a hurry. A set runs as long as the set needs to run.

The name is the argument. Entheogen — the thing that lets you see it. Oscillator — the thing that makes it audible. We are interested in the place where those two meet: sound as a way in, rather than a thing to stand and watch.

We play for people lying down.

What's on the table

Voltage

  • Modular oscillators
  • Granular resynthesis
  • Tape delay
  • Spring reverb
  • Field recordings
  • Feedback loops

Breath & wood

  • Harmonium
  • Singing bowls
  • Tanpura
  • Frame drum
  • Kalimba
  • Rattle & bell

Everything is tuned to the same drone, in just intonation. The electronics are not accompanying the acoustic instruments and the acoustic instruments are not decorating the electronics. It is one instrument with three people on it.

The trio

Soumendra Barman

Oscillator I

Richard Sewell

Oscillator II

Daniel Newcome

Oscillator III

  • Soumendra Barman

  • Daniel Newcome

Individual bios are being written. Until then, the three of us are best described by what the three of us do together.
